Canceling Whoopi Goldberg Is the Last Thing We Should Want
Let’s live in a world where no one is canceled. Let them talk, and let us respond.
Maybe I should send Whoopi Goldberg a dozen roses for her timing.
Just as my new book, “Uncanceled,” was about to be released, she put her foot in her mouth and brought down cancel culture’s wrath on her head. The Holocaust was “not about race,” she told her co-hosts on “The View.” I bet that Adolf Hitler would be more than a little shocked to find that out!
Whoopi went on to say, “Well, this is white people doing it to white people, so y'all gonna fight amongst yourselves.”
Her comments were wrong, and many people have pointed out that the full weight of the media and corporate America comes down on conservatives when they say things that are a lot less inflammatory.
Trust me when I tell you that I get it. I also get the temptation to rejoice over her suspension. Yes, she’s gotten fairer treatment than some on the right. It also doesn’t escape me that she’s done her fair share of ripping other people apart.
This may come as a shock to many of you people reading this, but I’ve never turned to Miss Kay and said, “Hey, let’s watch Whoopi Goldberg and the girls on the ‘The View’!” Never done it one single time.
I’m sure that if Whoopi made the long trek down to my house on the banks of the Ouachita River in Northeast Louisiana (and she would be welcome here, by the way), we would find that we would disagree on almost every single issue.
Despite our differences, I’m going out on a limb to say that canceling her for making a stupid comment is the last thing we should be calling for. For one thing, those who live by the sword, die by the sword. If a professional liberal like her can be canceled, what do you think will happen to you? We can’t just go around canceling people who say something with which we disagree.
I really do understand the temptation to cancel people like Whoopi, but I’m different from many people. The thing that sets me apart from a lot of folks is that I fear no one’s speech. Oh, I certainly understand that language has the power to shift an entire culture from one side to the other. No doubt about it! Words have power.
But the linguistic power is on my side. My words and the message they convey are an atomic bomb when dropped on the silliness of culture. That’s because my message, the gospel, is the power of God, according to the apostle Paul.
What can Whoopi Goldberg, Joe Rogan, or anyone else say to destroy the message that God raised Jesus from the grave? If Christ was indeed dead but is now alive, do you think I’m going to wring my hands and whimper every time someone says something that attacks my core beliefs? It’s not even about me, for crying out loud. The power is in the one who was raised. I just work for him.
In fact, I’m so confident in the message God has given those who trust him, I would hope that no one is canceled. Let them talk, and let us respond.
I’m never afraid to stack Christ up next to anyone’s ideas about reality. I don’t care what argument they try to toss my way. There’s nothing they can do to change the facts of history — that we are all created in God’s image, that Christ died for all people, that God raised him from the dead, that he now sits at God’s right hand and will come back for the redeemed.
And that, my friends, is basically the synopsis of my new book. “Uncanceled” is a call to everyone to have a real encounter with Jesus, to learn how to communicate his story, and to fearlessly proclaim it to a nation that sure does need to hear it. People who know Jesus don’t get defensive when challenged, nor do they respond in like manner. We aren’t trying to win arguments but to win people.
I think it’s a timely book with a timely message, but as I said, it’s not about me or my book — it’s about a holy and righteous God who poured out his love on evil men like me. It’s a story of redemption and healing. I pray that it blesses you.
Thanks Phil. I’m a huge fan. I agree I believe she should not be canceled but she should be fired off the show. For the last 5 years conservatives have been canceled, brought down, families destroyed. I believe the left should treat Whoopi the way they would treat any conservative saying the same thing she did. That’s the only way all this nonsense stops.
Thankyou Phil Robertson once again you have said the truth in love
